In this book by Alexander McCall Smith, Isabel Dalhousie is intent as intent in satisfying her curiosity about an “accident” she witnessed in happenstance. Add meanderings about Philosophy, intrigue and dashes of suspense to this central plot and you get “The Sunday Philosophy Club” which I found it about as interesting as a lecture on Platonic epistemology on a searing summer afternoon. Perhaps it wasn’t the best Alexander Smith novel for me to start with.

How can death be so lovely?

A young woman is brutally murdered as she goes home from school and Alice Sebold’s “The Lovely Bones” lets us in on the life that Susie Salmon leaves behind. One of the more interesting books revolving around family dramas that I’ve read recently, this book has that added drive of mystery in it and just the right kind of drama that let’s you sink in for pages on end. If there is something that this book lacks though. It would probably be closure.

Predictable, weird and for the most part cold and unconvincing, the book was a rather funny departure for a typical horror/suspense style that I get from Stephen King. Borrow it from a friend or read it on paper back instead.

Chitra Divakaruni’s work is an extraordinary collection of short stories which focuses on women from India and the cultural problems they’re facing. One of my favorite from the collection is “The Bats” which is a story about a young girl and her abusive father and her mother who keeps to remains with him despite the pain he causes both of them. The stories are powerful – able to present the societal challenges powerfully and still keep full elegance.
