Chitra Divakaruni's work is an extraordinary collection of short stories which focuses on women from India and the cultural problems they're facing. One of my favorite from the collection is "The Bats" which is a story about a young girl and her abusive father and her mother who keeps to remains with him despite the pain he causes both of them. The stories are powerful - able to present the societal challenges powerfully and still keep full elegance.
