Chitra Divakaruni's work is an extraordinary collection of short stories which focuses on women from India and the cultural problems they're facing. One of my favorite from the collection is "The Bats" which is a story about a young girl, her abusive father and her tragically patient mother who decides to remain with her father despite the pain he causes both of them. Like "The Bats," the short stories are often powerful and able to present the societal challenges in India and still maintain full artistic elegance.
